I have maintained for a little while a
list of things that I would like to change in the UK, if I ever had the
chance. Here it is, and it should give you some idea of my politics.
- Write a constitution which guarantees everyone on British soil:
- the right to protest
- the right to fair trial
- the right to no detention without charge
- the right to be tried within one's own country (e.g. no deportations to the US just on their say-so)
- the right to not be tortured
- the right for all people to be equal before the law
- ... and other stuff
- Outlaw extraordinary rendition flights from landing in the UK.
- Simplify the tax system;
- raise the personal income tax threshold to £10000, increasing with inflation each year
- introduce negative income tax, so poeple below the threshold recieve a living wage
- tax all income at the same rates (whether from shares or wages)
- tax the very rich more
- abolish inheritance tax
- zero-rate VAT on essentials (for example, sanitary products)
- Abolish Murdoch
- Build publically-owned windfarms, overruling local objections on basis of aesthestics or house price
drops
- Opt-out organ donation
- Build more social housing and remove the right to buy
- Common resources should not be provided for profit:
- Renationalise water companies and public transport
- Invest in modern, publically-owned communications infrastructure which companies can then run services over but which they do not own
- Prioritise new rail routes over road-building; invest heavily in more transport infrastructure
- Reform the House of Lords:
- turn hereditary and Spiritual peers into life peers
- lower the average age of peers with a retirement package
- allow peerages to be removed from those guilty of serious offences on the same basis as the Commons
- Make the oath that MPs swear be to serve their constituents, not the Queen
- Split the Church of England away from the government.
- Adopt multi-member constituencies with the transferable vote (aka STV)
- End the reliance on government targets in most places, and in others, make sure the targets represent the public rather than governmental interests (see 1)
- Decriminalise incest and prostitution.
- Decriminalise possession of drugs, and regulate and tax the sale of drugs
- Give heroin, for free, to heroin addicts, in a clinical setting
- Abolish tuition fees
- Scrap ID cards, the National Identity Register, and Trident
- Enact land redistribution laws to put more land into public ownership
- Do not allow MPs to take money from special-interest groups.
- Reform copyright to last for forty years.
- Abolish state recognition of marriage.
I also have a bunch of even less concrete ideas, which I intend to
research at some point:
- Prison issues:
- Prison should be a place of last resort.
- Increase funding for in-prison courses (educational and reformational).
- Fewer crimes should be imprisonable offences
- Increase ability of parents to see their children when they're inside
- Make life better for transgender people:
- Legislate for a "non-gender-specific" tickbox.
- Paternity leave of two weeks is not acceptable.
